Yesterday, Benzema was accused of blackmailing a fellow France international footballer. Benzema appeared before a Versailles judge Thursday morning after being held overnight.
According to CNN, the French police are looking into whether the Real Madrid striker played a part in an alleged attempt to extort money from Marseille player Mathieu Valbuena. The charges could land Benzema with a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Valbuena was alleged to have made a purported sex tape, which he is being asked to pay money for or have the tape leaked a source close to the investigation told AFP.
Benzema’s attorney Sylvain Cormier said in a statement broadcast on BMTV that the 27-year-old has “taken no part in this blackmail attempt,” that the case has gone public “in a fallacious manner,” and that Benzema’s “heart goes to his friend Mathieu Valbuena.”
Benzema is now reported to be involved in a completely different case concerning the trafficking of cocaine, in one of the largest drug trafficking scandals France has ever seen.
The scandal is nicknamed ‘Air Cocaine’ in the French press, and Le Point have revealed that the number one suspect – an individual who is accused of having paid for and sponsored flights from France to the Dominican Republic and Ecuador – was initially found because of his links with the Real Madrid striker.
The mastermind behind these transatlantic flights is purported to be a man known as “Daryan” or “Rayan” – a football agent and a big football fan – according to the two men who organised the flights, named Frank Colin and Nicolas Pisapia.
Though he’s said to have lived close to Benzema, and the link between the two of them is currently being investigated.
It is not the first time Mr Benzema has been involved in a police inquiry. Last year, he and fellow France international Franck Ribery were cleared of accusations they had slept with an under-age prostitute, who later went on to become a reality TV star and fashion designer.
