Cab Kills Ekpo Masquerade In Uyo

dead masqueradeA masquerade has been knocked down by a hit-and-run driver, today, ten days to the end of the year.

He is said to have been hit when the driver, who was in a high speed, tried to avoid another vehicle on the road.

His body is lying on Nwaniba Road by Use Offot, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital.

The identity of the masquerade is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

The African masquerade is a part of our culture that should either be totally scraped or reoriented, because it was primarily designed to demean women.

I remember one time I was a University student returning home from lectures. This was in Calabar around Edibe-Edibe. I was on a commercial motorbike. For no reason whatsoever, a masquerade approached said a few words to my bike rider and gave me a very painful lash around the waist with its long whip. I was in pain all through that day.

This is one of those times I feel no sympathy for the dead. Besides, it’s so ironic this masquerade had to die this way because they claim they are the spirits of our dead ancestors. Now I’m wondering if our ancestors die twice.
