Ever since I featured Omawumi Megbele and David Jones‘ covers of Adele‘s “Hello” on my blog, I’ve been getting a lot of mails asking my top five pick of the viral song.
I can tell you I’ve listened to most of the good “Hello” covers out there. Most of them are really good I must say even though Omawumi and Joe Thomas literally blew me away. I had quite a tough time narrowing it down to five of my favourite.
L-R: Omawumi Megbele, Joe Thomas
But a Top Five I must do so here goes…
This Nigerian born singer changed the game for “Hello.” Not only did she hold her vocals beautifully all through, her pitch at the chorus was to die for. I dare to say she almost gave the original singer a run for her money.
Then came the reggae twist…awesome! She gets tops scores for originality. Omawumi Megbele and her sonorous voice are my number 1 pick.
We may not know him as Joseph Lewis Thomas, but we all know him as Joe. He serenaded us in early 2000 with the most beautiful RnB songs ever made. I’m sure some of you made babies listening to his songs in the background. *wink*
Yea, Joe is an old talent so it came as no surprise when I heard his tribute to Adele. He ‘finished work.’ I was mesmerised by the intermittent falsettos he chipped into the song every now and then. And those violin strings play in the background? Now that got me. Joe is number 2.
3. Nicole Cross
Nicole Cross is a fairly unknown singer…more of a YouTube star. She is my number 3 pick because she has some Adele-like raspy edge to her voice. Sometimes, I could close my eyes and almost think it was Adele herself singing. Nicole’s really good.
4. Taps Mugadza
Don’t let his being placed in my number 4 fool you, Taps really blew me away. It was my first time hearing him sing and he made quite a lasting impression. I love the acoustics and soft rock edge he brought to the song. Also, his vocals are so on point. He’s one guy to watch out for.
5. David Jones David
Like I said in my earlier post about David Jones David, I never knew he was a singer. The Hotel Majestic star is one of my favourite actors and to hear him sing…and sing so well is an amazing bonus for me.
He received my top score for originality and best innovative cover of Adele’s ‘Hello.’
