Goalkeeper Injury Forces Sutton Utd To Put Defender In Goal After Wayne Shaw’s Sacking

After Wayne Shaw resigned from non-league Sutton United due to his infamous pie eating incident, you’d have been forgiven for thinking the entire ordeal was over, 90min reports.

However, in Sutton’s crucial league fixture away to Torquay, Ross Worner was taken off injured and with no reserve goalkeeper after Shaw’s departure, defender Simon Downer had to take over between the sticks.

It is perhaps the greatest footballing definition of irony in recent memory. Shaw’s ridiculous antics have rightly been condemned but for him to resign and leave Sutton short now looks like it could’ve been a big mistake.

Plus, surely it would have been brilliant to have seen the burly shot stopper actually out on the field instead of simply being a side act.
