The viral photo – which apparently depicts the proportion of each ingredient – has sparked outrage because it shows a sizable amount of palm oil, which has been classified as potentially carcinogenic.
The parent company of Nutella, Ferrero, has refuted this claim and says the spread contains healthy and safe palm oil. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the photo for many was just how much sugar the spread appears to contain.
Ferrero said of the high amounts of sugar in their product:
‘One of Ferrero’s core nutritional beliefs is that small portion sizes help people to enjoy their favorite foods in moderation.’
While the parent company has failed to confirm if this photo is true, it lists sugar as its first ingredient on the product, which according to the food labelling instructions, means it is the largest amount of all the ingredients placed in the product.
