A Russian warplane has gone down in Syria’s Bayirbukak region, near the Turkish border today, Tuesday, November 24, a Russian Ministry spokesperson has told CNN.
The Turkish military says it shot down the unidentified warplane because it repeatedly violated Turkish airspace. The Turks insist that the Russian SU-24 was “hit within the framework of engagement rules.”
The Anadolu Agency reports that a parachute was seen leaving the jet before the crash. The fate of the airman remains unknown. Heavy smoke was however seen where the plane fell.
The Turkish government is strongly opposed to the Syrian regime of Bashir al-Assad, but Russia has been backing Assad and flying their war planes actively over Syria.
