SaharaReporters Publisher Challenges President Jonathan To Show Proof Of His $5Million US Mansion

Sowore 27The publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has reacted to a viral article about him which claimed he was gifted a five million dollar mansion in Atherton, California by the ll Progressives Congress (APC).

In an article which Sowore titled, “Publisher Of SaharaReporters Challenges President Jonathan: Show The World Your Proof Of My $5m APC Mansion In California”, he claims the story was concocted by “some handlers of President Goodluck Jonathan,” whose objective was “to fool the simple-minded.”

He said this allegation stemmed from the online poll the news site conducted to determine who would win the presidential election between Prez Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari come 2015. Sowore claims PDP’s jealousy stemmed from Buhari winning the polls.

An excerpt of what Sowore wrote:

Everyone around the world knows that Nigerian governments since 2006 have been trying to shut down or shut up SaharaReporters. Technical efforts to shut us down occur almost every week. Efforts to shut us up are no less prevalent, and they include blackmail from various directions.

The Atherton mansion claim, which was apparently written by some handlers of President Goodluck Jonathan, followed renewed attacks on the site infrastructure during the summer. The well-oiled and well-heeled team sent bots after our server and crippled it for several days.

In this latest attempt, Mr. Jonathan’s hit squad seems to have gone berserk over an online poll conducted by SaharaReporters, which showed that he would be defeated by 75% if retired General Muhammad Buhari, was pitched against him in the 2015 general election.”

My Deevanalysis

  • Correct me if I’m wrong, but I used to rate the news site, Sahara Reporters the same with PUNCH, PREMIUM TIMES, VANGUARD or THIS DAY. I saw it as a balanced journalistic news site. But lately it has veered from its original vision and tilted toward junk political sensationalism.
  • Look at the title of the article, “Challenges President Jonathan”…what could be more sensational than this? In the first place, was Prez GEJ’s name even mentioned in the story? Why rope him in? What is Sowore’s proof that President Jonathan even knows anything about the  News Day Reporters story? What if this news site was looking for traffic to their website?
  • Why is Sowore angry that he is being served with the same spoon he used in dishing for others? Most of his recent stories have no proof. Besides, Sowore has no respect for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Therefore he has lost all the respect and credibility he worked so hard to build over the years.
  • The issue for me isn’t whether he was gifted a $5m mansion or not. I don’t know anything about any mansion. The main focus of my analysis is this; is Sahara Reporters’ journalism well balanced and unbiased? I would have been the first to come to his defense if I felt it was! As far as I’m concerned, Sowore got beaten at his own game.
  • The essence of criticizing a government is to encourage reform and improve the quality of life of a nation. It is not to insult or damage a leader’s personality. Sometimes, when the government listens and acts, the same critic should tell the masses that: “government don do this one for una ooo!” The positive responses from the masses encourages the government to do even more.
  • That is what matured critics do, not making stupid videos of the president of  a whole ‘Giant of Africa’ sitting on the toilet. Sowore, you fall hand, big time. Criticize corruption, yes. Criticize incompetence and bad governance yes, but use a mature approach that will make the government of the day to listen.
  • I won’t say much. Read through the top comments and reactions on Sowore’s Facebook page after he posted the story. Nigerians are becoming wiser and less brain-washed by all the lies being fed by the media. I took a screenshot of the comments but covered the commenters identity because I do not have permission to share their thoughts here.
